Before I bought this camera, I searched the web for equivalent products. I was slightly biased in that I already owned a Olympus camera (E-300). However, what I was looking for was a camera that had 10 or more mega pixels, and had image stabilization as I planned to use it for nature photography; animals don't stand still. Light weight was not a as important but nice to have.
This camera met all of my expectations. The image stabilization works quite well. I had one surprise; the lenses were also lighter than their predecessors. I highly recommend this camera.

Excellent camera meets professional needs........2007-12-24

I waited a long time before switching from a 35mm film SLR Canon camera to a digital. I asked many photographers, read online reviews, and browsed through many magazine articles. Then I spoke with Keith Lazelle, a superb nature photographer from Washington State, and he told me he switched from film to digital with an Olympus Evolt 500, because he was then able to use his other Olympus lenses with an adapter. I figured if it was good enough for such an excellent photographer, it would be good enough for me! I have not been disappointed.

The Evolt 500 with its 2 lenses are more than enough for my needs. I love to take spontaneous shots of wildlife and waterways, and this camera has been an absolute delight. It took me a while on the learning curve for all the digital stuff (and I'm still learning), but overall it is very easy to use, and images turn out very sharp.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and have been in the field photographing under plenty of rain and cold weather - and while I always have an extended hood on the lens to protect it from rain drops, I am not always successful in protecting the entire camera. I have never had any moisture/condensation problems.

I highly recommend this camera to anyone either beginning to use a digital SLR or to a professional.

Excellent machine!.......2007-12-24

I've had this camera for just over a month and have just started to scratch the surface of learning what this baby can do! I am very impressed with the quality of the body and the kit lenses that came with it are awesome, giving me everything from an 28mm wide angle to 300mm long lens, with incredible macro capability from each. I had been using 35mm for many years up until I went digital 7 years ago, and this camera by far is the best I've ever owned. I agree with other reviews I have read, the camera has difficulty in low light with the auto focus function, but this is easily fixed by using the manual focus function, easily accessable through the display on the back. I did extensive research on DSLR's before purchasing, the Olympus had the best features, especially being able to use the rear display for live framing, which no other DSLR offers. I have been an amateur photographer for 40+ years and highly recommend this camera!

The live-view and image stabilization features are really helpful. For the price, it is a value for money deal.
Always buy a 2GB card along with the camera.

I did a lot fo reearch before I bought this camera and I'm comletely satisfied with the Olympus E500. A family member has a Nikon 40 and was showing me all it could do and I think I have a better camera for less
money, plus got an extra 40-150mm lens. I would definetly recomend this camera to anyone looking to step up from the point and shoot type.

Cost effective transition to DSLR.......2007-10-30

Still not convinced that you need a DSLR? I spent a few years with various point and shoot digital cameras after giving up my old 35mm film cameras in the late 90s. I was using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5K 5MP Digital Camera with 12x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom (Black) prior to this and while the Lumix's Leica glass is hard to beat, I found the electronics to be a limiting factor in my picture taking.

I liked what I had heard about Olympus four thirds system:

and I picked up the E-500 in a store and really liked the feel - big and solid, which made my hands feel a tad smaller and the camera easier to use.

1) Excellent low light performance
2) Usable flash on the camera - more powerful than it appears

6) Works well with Linux - I use Ubuntu 7.10

Having never owned an Olympus camera before I was a little unsure of the quality compared to other high named brands. I found that it was just the same quality without the expense of paying for the so called "Name Brands" which you are paying for the name not the quality of the product. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the many photographic nececities that you get on those expensive brands, that Olympus has just as many features to produce excellant pictures.

I have done much research and reading on this camera before pulling the trigger and I'm very happy with decision so far - coming from an P/S camera - this camera does required some time to know all of the many features that this camera has - but once you have that "right settings for your shots" - the pictures will be amazing.

I love it so far! It was nice because I got it for a birthday present and then it came with so many parts! I am excited to learn about the camera and use it all the time but it is definitely for those who want a professional type of camera.

This kit pretty much took care of anything I would have purchased for a DSLR for the next few years, with the exception that I would probably want to buy more CF cards. The camera is very nice and the 4/3 format is great. I was weary about the motorized auto focus in manual focusing... but I use the half click single point auto focus and then manual focus to speed up things, some cases it's nice without having to deal with the AF/MF switch when trying to work fast to blur parts of images. The ISO1600 shots really saved my butt on a few pictures, at the expense of graininess, but I'll do post processing to smooth out the noise. A tad over ISO400 is nice, and good enough for night shots without too much noise. The maximum open shutter is 60 seconds, so I've done some of the night light tricks just to experiment. Granted this camera is pretty much the bottom of the line now for Olympus with the 410,510, and the new e-3, but since it's an all in one for about the price of the 410 and 510, bodies, It's great in my book. There is not image stabilization mode, except for one that uses a fast shutter and high ISO settings, which any camera will do, but this has a mode for it in the SCENE settings. Which is okay for the most part for me when I move to using a tripod. But if you take a lot of night shots, you might want to switch to an image stabilizing camera.
