Great product excellent chipsets.......2007-11-19
This is a great product obviously they can't give you power to devices as Hard Drive (for this I recomend that comes with the computer), the chipset of firewire is Texas Instrument (the best recommended for professional video) and nec for usb that is great. Compatible with a mac for my is a excellent product.
Not useful without power adapter.......2007-09-16
Unless you have the ( as in their specific ) power adapter, this product is useless. It should be included with the product or sold separately, but easily obtainable. Neither is possible.

I ordered for the flexibility of every both USB and different firewire ports, only to later read the reviews of others who had to purchase external power supplies. I contacted Adaptec and they informed me exactly as I suspected. Users using un-powered devices had problems and those using the card solo with a powered device yielded no problems. I took a chance and opened the box and mine worked fine with my JVC camcorder via 1394/FireWire no problem. I also tried the card with an AC powered Western Digital MyBook hard drive and it worked as well. Both devices required no Radio Shack external adapter. For kicks & giggles, I tried with my LaCie Porsche USB powered portable HD and it failed (no AC power).
Adaptec Support's official response was: "You will need to get an external power adapter to plug in any device that requires more than 500mA, if the device has its own power cable than it should suffist."
I was informed by a hardware expert that most any PC card with USB or firewire may fail (exactly like this card) if supporting an un-powered unit through the ports - not sure how true???
Lousy product and cheating marketing strategy! Don't buy it!.......2006-12-06
Just like other reviewer said, the product needs a power adapter. Without that, I would rather buy other USB2.0 cards on ebay($15~20) instead of the useless trash. I can't believe that the Adaptec engineers designed the jack for external power source but didn't include it in the package. Who comes up with the stupid idea? Do they really make more money by selling the missing power adapter? I doubt it. It just makes more inconvenience. I should check its reviews on Amazon, but I didn't. Now I have to waste more time to find a appropriate power cable, and time is money!

Adaptec USED to offer an AC adapter for this unit and the very similar AUA-1411 (2 USB2, 1 6-pin FireWire ports). It was item 2069800, the ACK-1411 kit - but it's no longer in their online store!
The online User Guide for this item says it should have a "12V, *2.1A*" (my emphasis) adapter. This comes out to 25.2 watts available. 2 USB2 connections only consume 2x (5V x 500mA) = 5 watts, so no problem. However, the 1394 specs say that devices may call for 8-30V, 1.5A - a range of from 12-45 watts, far exceeding the Adaptec adapter's output at the high end!
The Radio Shack adapter can only produce 12V x 1.1A = 13.2 watts, which just barely reaches the low end of the 1394 wattage range. Check the power requirements of any device you connect to the 6-pin 1394 port VERY carefully when using the RS adapter, or you're risking an overheat, meltdown, or fire!
I have a query in to the Adaptec store about the ACK-1411 and will update this review when they get back to me.
The really sad thing is, if they had included the adapter, this could easily have been a 4-star review - Adaptec products have always been reliable, efficient, and stable for me in the past. How this oversight got into this product, I really can't imagine - it doesn't fit with my idea of Adaptec at all.

I have used a top end Leica glass in the past, and needed something light and small in addition. This one is perfect, delivers a crisp & clear image. An amazing binocular for the money.
