Surprisingly cool.......2006-06-29
I was grocery shopping at the discount grocery store (blemished boxes, wierd off-brands, stuff like that) and found this tablet for $25. My girlfriend had been wanting a tablet for quite some time so I thought, "What the hell, it's twenty-five bucks."
The only thing I installed off of the included CD was the actual driver. I assume the photo editing software is subpar, so I'm not even going to bother with it; I use Paint Shop Pro 7. It also includes some kind of handwriting recognition software that I skipped, assuming that the Microsoft Office handwriting software would suffice.
After installing the included battery in the pen, installing the driver, rebooting, and plugging the tablet into the USB, it didn't work. I was pretty disappointed. I checked the troubleshooting page of the manual, and one of its obvious suggestions was to replace the battery. Luckily I had a known good Duracell AAA still in a pack, because it turned out the cheapo battery included with the product was dead. I replaced the battery and everything worked fine!
In fact, I love this thing. I don't even want to use a mouse anymore. I think it'll be even more efficient once I map some more functions to the hot cells. You can set these to do some internet functions like open a particular web site, send an email; run any executable with any parameters; or fire a key combination with ctrl/shift/alt/any other key. All three of these functions seem to work pretty well.
Now I am by no means an artist, but the second thing I did with this tablet was to set a cute little cartoon drawing I found on the cover of a magazine on top of the tablet and trace it into Paint Shop Pro. This was fun! I think the accuracy of the tablet is greater than my ability to draw a straight line or a smooth curve. The tip of the pen is just sensitive enough (the tip emulates a left click) and the buttons on the barrel of the pen are well placed for middle and right click functions (These button assignments are configurable. You can change which mouse button they emulate or make them double-clicks).
Using Microsoft's handwriting recognition software, I was able to create a short document pretty easily. Of course, I can't write as fast as I can type, so this probably wouldn't be very useful but for things like filling in text boxes and such. The only problems with the recognition I attribute to the software, not the hardware.
The problems I have with this product are minor. For one, you must be an administrator of the computer to install the drivers (understandably), but you must also be logged in as an administrator to change any of the settings in the tablet's control panel. I can't change any of the hot cell assignments and things like that on my normal user account, which is a little annoying.
The way this thing works is pretty neat; you don't actually have to touch the pad with the pen except to click. Just hovering the pen within about an inch of the surface is enough to move the cursor. A little green light on the tablet blinks when the pen is being detected (I guess - the manual doesn't mention this light). The only thing is, the little hole near the top where, presumably, the pen is supposed to be kept when not in use is too close to the tablet surface so the light is blinking and, again presumably, the battery in the pen is being drained. This is solved by putting the pen in upside down, but it isn't very stable this way.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this purchase. It was a great deal! Honestly, I was really surprised that it worked this well. For $25 at the Grocery Outlet I expected a piece of junk, but I'm planning on going back to get another one today so my girlfriend and I don't have to fight over this one ;)

The product itself is good.But theapplication software that comes with it is useless. I wish they could have provided a better art tool kit software with it.

Poor Software Support for Flip Video Ultra 60 Minute Camera.......2007-12-28
Yesterday, December 27, I spent at least 3 hours trying to sort out the mess called the Flip Video "Ultra" 60 minute camera. It involved at least 3 calls to tech support lasting a total of about 2 hours. Knowledge level was fair to poor.
My problem started with downloading the software update that constantly pestered me on the screen. it took a long time to do this and it wiped out the entire contents of my camcorder and placed them in a back-up folder! later I was told by tech support that it wasn't really necessary to download the software update. I ended up taking the battereis out of my camcorder twice, renaming each of the 14 videos once, switching the unit on and off 8 times-three times, reloading everything at least
twice, etc.
Still the problem persists: 39 minutes of recording left, with no recordings on the camcorder. I was told by 2 different representatives that I would get an E-mail within 4 hours and also a telephone call. None of that happened.
I figured that I screwed away a lot of time with your riece of junk!

You may want to hold off on considering this a full working product, particularly if you use a mac.

Snapshots.......2007-12-28
The downside of the Flip Ultra camcorder is it's video only. The UP SIDE is that in the edit mode, you can select the exact frame you want to save as a snapshot! That's even cooler than a still digital camera where you might miss the shot!

The camera is a neat idea. I bought it to take videos of my family on Christmas.
Major problems as people have already noted are: errors during transfer of videos to a computer (which requires a firmware/software update which I haven't been able to download yet) and difficulty with youtube uploading.
Other suggestions for future models would be to be able to pause, fast-forward, and rewind the videos while watching them on the camera itself. Also a rechargeable battery that charges through the USB port would be nice. A USB cable would be nice also as the camera blocks other USB ports when plugged into the computer.
The nice things: it is really easy/fun to use and takes good videos which you can watch directly on the camera or TV. The drag has been trying to do anything else. Customer support seems very accesssible by email/phone, 24/7 and at least they provided the firmware update (though I can't get it to download yet).
Like everyone has commented, a good idea but a sad disappointment to those who got it for Christmas. I haven't returned mine yet.
Rosie Totally Digs The Flip.......2007-12-28
Rosie O'Donnell has nothing but high praises for the Flip Video. She has shared with all of her bloggers what she can do using the Flip Video camera. Just recently she used the Flip Video, in it's waterproof case under water and the quality of the video is just awesome.
She even plans on doing an online help desk for some of the bloggers having difficulty uploading the video.
Rosie currently has a bunch of Flip Video of "Shady" a squirrel that visits her home daily It's so great to see her creativity to challenge the squirrels to get their walnuts etc. She captures scenes that can't be seen to so many of us. She even took a video of an inguana in Florida walking along the ramp.
The best of them all is of the dolphins with the most recent shot of the dolphin under water in Florida.
Many of her bloggers trusted her word and bought the Flip Video for Christmas presents and the feedback to her is awesome.
I don't have one as I have to save up for one, but I know I will enjoy it once I get it! :)
