Excellent Power Supply for Air or Road Travel.......2003-05-26
As a road warrior who has spent a great deal of time on flights and long drives, I wanted the Targus PA380U for both modes of travel. Given that most American Airlines planes have a DC cigarette lighter jack under the seats, this power supply allows laptop users to stay powered up while on flights. It works just as well on the road. Running my laptop with Streets and Trips 2003 and a Deluo USB GPS, I can get an impressive map display in an automobile.
The great feature about this power supply is the size. With a footprint of a cigarette pack, it is substantially more compact that other supplies or DC to AC inverters. One actually has to question how it can be so small. Perhaps it might have something to do with a unique ability to handle the heat generation. In fact, it gets alarmingly hot when used with my power hungry laptop. I would almost suggest there should be a warning about operating the device in a enclosed space such as a laptop case or under a blanket where it might generate enough heat to catch fire.
One concern I had with the Targus PA380U before purchase is its ability to match the power consumption of my laptop as the manufacturer's AC supply generates a 100 watts, which is 42% more than the Targus generates. In reviews of other similar products, users claim that a laptop couldn't use a particular DC-DC supply unless the battery was substantially charged. This would entail slowly draining the battery during use. On the contrary, I am able to charge a nearly completely drained battery while using the computer.
Another opportunity to use the device is when leaving or traveling to a location without convenient AC power. When working in random locations such as fast food establishments, I have found that the Targus PA380U is a convenient tool to recharge the battery after spending time at a location without available AC power.
In summary, it a great little DC-DC supply for air or land travel that can make the road warrior's life a great deal easier. Clearly, the engineers who developed the device did a great job packing 70 watts of power into a small, lightweight device that is definitely worth the price premium over other competing universal power supplies.
