Hybrid batteries ROCK!.......2007-12-17
I'm a believer in this new generation of batteries. I was using long-life Lithium AA in my BT mouse and everyday camera. That cost me about $10/month to replace. For the same cost, I got a set of AA Hybrids. (about $16 for 8 AA) That's a one-time cost, so break-even $$ after one month, now "free". They hold their charge as claimed, you can use your old NiMH charger, and have about 75% as much juice as Lithiums. I swap to freshly-charged batteries every couple weeks, and I'm always ready. No more wondering how much juice left in the expensive Lithiums. Hybrids...yea!!!!
The best rechargeable batteries--period!.......2007-12-12
These really are the best rechargeable batteries available for general use. Just like Rayovac says, they combine the best features of alkaline and NiMH cells.
Low-drain applications:
They don't last quite as long as alkaline, but they last for plenty long enough that the inconvenience of having to change/recharge them sooner is more than offset by the convenience and cost savings of being able to recharge them. For example, I use 6 AAA Hybrids as backup batteries in two baby monitor transmitters. Through testing I have determined that I should recharge them just every six months. If I were using alkaline batteries, I would need to replace them once a year. If I were using non-hybrid NiHM batteries, I would need to charge them monthly.
High drain applications:
They last just as long as regular NiHM batteries of the same mAh rating. OTOH, my Hybrids are 2100mAh, but some of my non-hybrids are as high as 2800mAh. But even here, the convenience of being able to charge the dead hybrids as soon as you've replaced them, and then store them charged for months before using them is a great time saver over having to charge regular NiMH immediately before use. To me this is well worth the somewhat lower mAh ratings.
Cons
You're not supposed to charge the ones I have in 15-minute chargers. It works, but I've read that this may reduce the battery life from about 1000 recharge cycles to 100 recharge cycles. It also seems that they don't charge as fully in a 15-minute charger as they do in an 8-hour charger.
Conclusion
For overall versatility and ease of use, these are by far the best rechargeable batteries you can get. I can no longer justify using alkaline batteries, and find it hard to justify using regular NiMH batteries as well.
Eneloop works; these don't.......2007-11-08
Rayovac and Sanyo Eneloop hybrids supposedly have approximately the same specs, but these are good for about 50 pictures whereas normal NiMH and Eneloop hybrids are good for 300-400. I used four sets of 4 of these within two weeks of charging, then my one remaining set of Eneloops (after others were confiscated in Dubai due to some secret carry-on restriction). Perhaps these are an early run or seconds, sold cheaply by Rayovac, but in any case they don't work.
The Eneloops also held their charge for at least two months and still worked at least as long as normal freshly charged NiMH. I think they lasted longer, but was not counting.
What you need to know about "HYBRID Technology" Batteries.......2007-09-01
Please note that I have not purchased this item ("NiMH Rechargeable Batteries with New Advanced HYBRID Technology"), so I cannot comment on its quality. However, I like to clarify some confusion about marketing claims here.
1. The claim of "4 times longer lasting" is actually referring to the battery's storage life (when it is NOT being used), and not its operation time or capacity.
2. No matter what brand of digital camera you have, as long as it accepts AA cells, you can use ANY brand of rechargeable NiMH cells in it. However, it is best to choose the latest generation of low self-discharge cells. Here's why:
All rechargeable NiMH batteries suffer from a problem called "self-discharge". This problem is especially bad for AA cells with capacity of 2500mAh or higher. If you charge up a set of those NiMH cells and leave them in your camera, the cells start to lose their charge rapidly even when the camera is off. Then when you want to use the camera a few weeks later, you'll likely be greeted by the "low battery" indicator. Because of this problem, you always have to recharge the cells just before using them.
A new generation of rechargeable NiMH (often called "read-to-use", "Pre-Charged" or "Hybrid") are specially designed to have very low self-discharge rate. They typically claim to retain about 80% of their charges in 6 months (the Sanyo eneloop claims to retain 85% in 12 months, but that was only based on simulation test under room temperature). However, this advantage comes with a trade-off in cappacity. Typical capacity of a LSD (low self-discharge) AA cell is only around 2000-2100mAh, compared to 2500-2700mAh for the older generation of NiMH cells.
I have personally tested several brands of LSD cells, and I can attest that they do work (almost) as well as advertised. For any of my photo equipment, I'll pick a set of dependable 2000mAh LSD cells over a set of unreliable 2500mAh cells, any time.
