The USB version of Gravis's GamePad Pro makes for an extremely simple setup--in Windows 98, all you need to do is plug it in and start playing. Mac setup is almost as simple and involves an additional software installation with the provided software.
The GamePad Pro's long 8-foot connecting cable gives you plenty of room to take a step or two back from your PC while gaming. The gamepad also features hot swapping so you can plug and unplug various USB peripherals without having to reboot or turn off your machine. In Windows 98, the gamepad uses the driver for an "HID Compliant Game Controller," so you can start playing right after installation, without having to calibrate the pad. Upon installation, you can also immediately access the Test area of the Game Controllers function to make sure the gamepad is connected properly.
The GamePad Pro's basic layout should be familiar to anyone who's ever played a console game (in fact, it closely resembles the standard PlayStation controller). It has a thumb-controlled directional pad on the left for movement, four action buttons on the right, and four flipper buttons on the top of the pad to handle additional game controls. If you're one of those folks who'd rather manage movement with a stick, the GamePad Pro also features an attachable joystick that screws into the middle of the D-pad. However, the pad can feel a bit small for users with sizable hands.
The GamePad Pro works well for sports games (it was perfect for NFL Blitz 2000) and action games, but is limited by the number of buttons for more involved games, such as first-person shooters.

A decent starting pad for emu-gamers........2006-01-23
Among emulation gamers this is a common gamepad. Its a mix between the SNES and Playstation pads (the one before they went analog). You have the 4 candy colored buttons like the japanese Super Famicom pad (US Snes pads just had grey buttons), Start and Select (exactly where they should be), and 4 shoulder buttons; 2 of those would be L and R, the other two I'd map to the Save State / Load State function on ZSNES.
I can't say I care for the D-pad though, its bumpy and has a screwhole? Nothing like the tried and true "cross" of my yesterdays. Its a fair pad for just ZSNES, but if you wanna do other stuff, get a Lik-Sang adapter, download Joy2Key and dig any standard or aftermarket PS1/PS2 pad out of your closet. You can map keys to buttons and mouse to analog sticks. Works even with the PC games that normally were Keyboard/Mouse only.

The fact that this controller is cheap, USB Plug and Play ready, and so similar to the playstation controller is the reason it's a solid bet.
However here are the problems:
1. The directional pad is innacurate on precision. If you just need to walk around in a game its great, but if you need to hit a specific direction, it will come off usually as a diagonal.
2. The buttons are very loud and get stuck. The Green button doesn't pop out most of the time anymore. It seems like a small problem, but it can get very frustrating.
This is a good buy, but not your best choice. If you need a quick, cheap way to not having to use your keyboard, it's well worth your money.

I Bought this controller/gamepad from a software store near where I lived because I needed a good controller/gamepad that was usb. I bought this one about 3-4 years ago and it is still working great to this day. I own a gravis game pad the non usb one. Got to love gravis for making such a sturdy and long lasting gamepad.
Over 6 Years Have Passed and This Little Baby Still Performs.......2005-07-01
Sure, this controller lacks the charm of other controllers with their fancy 20 buttons, but for a simple 10 button controller, this thing suceeds in every way possible. With it's plug and play interface, you can plop this baby into just about any computer and start playing. The controller has the PSX feel, so it is great for almost all action games. It even works with obscure no name games. I have not found one game this controller does not work with. Like I said, it lacks numerous buttons which can suck for top end shooter games, but for almost any other game, 10 is more than enough. I was just playing Lord of the Rings the other day and it performed miracously. If you want a good controller for those freeware action games and the more beefed up commercial games, look no further than the Gravis Game Pad Pro.
I have had mine for almost 7 years now and it still works. If that doesn't say craftmanship, what does?

the first time i bought this controller it was great since it looks like the ps controller after a year or so the controller just stops functioning. Same problem happen to my cousins controller it just stops functioning after a year. This controller and the sidewinder i dont recommend buying, spend a bit more on the saitek controllers.
