Best all around tripod for SLR shooters.......2007-12-05

The GT2931 tripod combines the best attributes of all my previous tripods. It is light at 3.5lbs, it's fast to set up and repack, adjusts to uneven terrain, can hold up to 22lbs, gets the camera lens above eye-level (with a Mini-Studio or Arca swiss mono ball head attached), and is quite rigid even with the center column extended. Plus it has a cool almost wood grain black composite finish made of volcanic rock. Perfect when hiking around volcanoes!

I had a heavy Bogen/Manfrotto convertible which was also a good height and could adjust to uneven terrain and had quick operating lever locks but at over 5 lbs was not the best for trekking so I got the compact convertible 3205 which was 3.5 lbs. This worked fine for travelling around Europe and hiking around the national parks but it would only reach to 54"with the neck extended. With a head this got the camera to just under eye level. Not the best for standing portraits as you would be looking up at a person's face, but fine for landscapes. The legs however were a hassle as you had to tighten and untighten them rather than just flip a lever. Eventually the legs would begin to creep and you have to retighten which made it that much harder to loosen. Plus in cold weather the metal was not comfortable to the touch.

I had always known that Gitzo was considered the ultimate still shooters tripod but until recently they had those threaded leg locks that took far too long to tighten and loosen. OK if you set up once in a studio but bad for moving around a lot. Who wants to walk around town with the legs fully extended carrying the tripod on the shoulder. Not me. Now that they have been bought by the Bogen/Manfrotto parent company, the locks have improved. By grabbing all the locks on one leg at once and with just a quarter turn of the collar, the legs can be pulled to the desired length and retightened again with just a quarter turn. The harder you push down on the leg, the tighter they hold. It makes it so much easier as you walk around , see something worth shooting and to quickly set up the tripod, clip the camera to the ball head with a quick release, adjust the view, shoot, unclip, and pack up the tripod. Do this enough times and you'll soon appreciate the thought that went into the design of this great product now made in Italy.

OK Board for Intel ... but ..........2005-07-09

This is an OK Intel Board for a Pentium 4 processor, however from now on I'll go with a board that supports an AMD processor (I'm finished with Intel and will now only use AMD)
