Light, stable, and quick setup.......2007-11-29
As I started photographing through my telescope, I needed a replacement for my aluminum Gitzo Reporter tripod. Based on reviews on DPReview and birdforum.net, I purchased this tripod.
Benefits:
- This tripod is lighter to carry, better at dampening vibrations, and faster to setup than my Gitzo.
- The possibility of setting the angle of each leg has proved useful.
- The center pole is easier to adjust than my Gitzo.
- It is comfortable to work with even in freezing wind and rain.
- Given its performance, the price is reasonable.
Problems:
- While extending the legs, the leg sections can "crash" into the stopping screw making a disturbing sound. I've learned to be careful when loosening the locking screws.
- The center pole feels a bit cheap and wobbly but works fine.
- The center pole is very long making it hard to work with the legs spread all the way out. There is a shorter pole available as a replacement but I'd prefer to not have a pole at all.
- I sometimes wish I had bought a model with only one extension instead of two. The one extension models available in the US are too short for me though and have too many extras I don't care for. Buying directly from Germany proved too expensive.
- The natural wood color does stand out compared to the default black color of most tripods.
All in all, I'm very happy with this tripod and with the pictures it has enabled me to get.

The image posted is the Tasco Offshore 21 Marine Binocular. These are outstanding binoculars and I have had a pair for 4yrs.
I have a friend who is off on a sailing trip this week and so I ordered a pair here as a parting gift. They arrived yesterday and guess what??...The item shipped is an inferior unit.. the Tasco Offshore 19.. manual focussing and less sharp and bright. I have no time to have the item returned and the correct part delivered so I am decidedly unhappy.
If you read buried in the details of the item listing it says OS19 but pictured is the OS21 so i ask you... how do you spell FRAUD?

Short of a pair of Fujis costing twice as much, I can't think of a better choice for the outdoorsman or boater. I have a pair I've owned for about three years now that always accompany me in a boat.
There are a lot of binoculars advertised as "waterproof" that will fog up in a moderate downpour- including some cheaper units sold under the Tasco label. But these are the real deal. Complete waterproofing, individual eye focusing, and built-inprotective eyepiece and objective lens covers. Nothing to fall overseas or get lost in the lockers. You can also get a slightly pricier version with a built in compass.
They're sharp and contrasty- more so than most inexpensive binos- shock resistent, waterproof and small enough to be handy. A good value all around. Certainly the best choice in boating glass.
