Product Description
A tripod helps a photographer get sharp, crisp pictures and video. Unfortunately, many tripods are often bulky and heavy so some are reluctant to carry them along for many outdoor shoots. Fortunately, there is Modo. The MANFROTTO 785B Modo Maxi Tripod is a unique tripod that extends to a useful 59.2 inches high yet can fold down to about 17 inches. For low angle images, the bottom of the innovative center column is designed to twist off, and the three variable leg angles allow the tripods to reach 6.9 inches from ground level. Developed with a versatile hybrid head, the Modo can be used with both digital camera and video equipment. With the touch of the safety button, the quick-release plate allows the user to easily switch between cameras and equipment, making capturing family, vacation and everyday moments simple. With a practical, sleek black anodized aluminum finish and a total weight of about 2 pounds, the 785B Modo tripod is designed to deliver a wide range of photo opportunities in many places and situations without angst. As a hobbyist or professional focusing on getting the best shots, that's a really good thing. Get the Modo today. It's a perfect tool for the creative artist. Maximum Load Capacity - 2.2 pounds (1 kg) Weight - 2.16 pounds (0.98 kg)
Customer Reviews:
great tripod.......2007-11-01
Lightweight and easily adjustable. What more could you want? I am not normally a tripod user because they add weight and take too long to adjust. I am a DSLR shooter and when I need to use a long shutter speed, hand holding the camera isn't good enough. This tripod worked out great for me.
Awesome portable tripod.......2007-09-13
As a professional photographer and videographer, I am the owner of several Bogen tripods, including heavy duty ones for large video cameras. This little guy really rocks! Using it with a "Canon S5 IS" photo camera, it doesn't have any problems. The legs are sturdy enough to support the weight of the camera, even when fully extended, and the ball head keeps the camera from moving, regardless of the head position. Extending the center post didn't affect the stability too much, which was surprising, but in a windy environment, that would not be so. I tried using my "Canon 20D" with "28-135mm IS" lens on it, but it was a little too much for the head to handle, and had to support the majority of the weight with my other hand. But that is fine, because it's not rated for near that much weight. The unit is compact, lightweight, and is really easy to transport. Even has a great price! Full 5-stars!
Best hiking tripod?.......2007-07-14
I searched quite a bit for a light yet sturdy tripod for hiking and travel. This is the best I found, and the price is very reasonable. The ball head is great and the grip easy to use and set -- I actually like it better than my more serious heavy tripod. I just wonder how the plastic parts will hold up over time.
It comes with a quick release (also very easy to use, but plastic), easily shortened center column, adjustment for video panning (limiting the range of motion, as desired), and a level. The legs are in 5 sections, with flip down clasps that are quick and easy -- better than screw or twist-type locks. The fifth section, however is necessarily quite narrow and a little flexible, if not wobbly.
Perfectly good for what it is.......2007-02-13
I needed a basic field tripod, and this tripod exceeds my expectations for utility and support. I wish that it had come with a zippered carryall of some sort - and some metal in the head would have made it more sturdy. That being said, I am perfectly happy to use my Olympus E-500 on it with my 50-150mm standard Zuiko lens.
My previous tripods have been the type that you buy at the local general stores (Target, Sears, etc.).
I find that this tripod is lighter than what I am used to carrying, and sturdier. The extra buckles are a nuisance - but the thing folds down into nothing! Plus, like another reviewer said, you can drop the height practically to the floor. The whole thing could be taller, maybe.
Great tripod.......2006-12-18
I was mainly looking for a tripod that I could easily carry. This tripod is quite light and versatile in the range of heights it will accommodate. As others have noted, if you're looking for sturdy, look elsewhere, but the advantage of portability makes this tripod very attractive. I also like the locking mechanisms, which are much more firm than those I've seen on some less expensive lightweight tripods. Even though the manufacturer suggests not using this tripod for SLRs, I have no problems using it with my Cannon Digital Rebel SLR, even with the 70-300mm telephoto.

Customer Reviews:
Photo service not a picture frame.......2007-12-19
Purchased this picture frame for my mother who is in her late 80's. Picture is fine but getting the pictures into the picture frame storage from a computer without subscribing to the service is impossible. (Note: service does not work with a digital phone.) Only way to load the pictures into the picture frame storage is via a home network ethernet connection. Oh by the way that costs and additional $35 for the required additional device. One cannot load pictures from flash card or from the computer directly to the device. So an older person with arthritis may have difficulty inserting the flash card. The picture frame is designed to be a device to sell the company's picture subscription - Like the razor and the razor blades. How much trouble would it have been to allow the flash card to load pictures onto the picture frame from a memory device? Certainly would never recommend it for a gift to grandparents who are not tech savy or who have arthritis in their hands or live in an assisted living environment or other environment with phones that are not 'ceiva friendly'. Find another picture frame that does not exist just to sell you a pricy yearly subscription.
I love this frame!.......2007-12-18
I love the concept of this frame and I am baffled that no other companies are offering something similar. This is the perfect gift for technically-challenged grandparents. We bought two frames - one for my parents who live 5 minutes away (but have another grandchild 5 hours away, and just want a constant slide show of all their grandchildren) and one for my in-laws who have grandchildren spread all over the place. I love the fact that myself and my sister (and siblings-in-law) can all upload our photos to one website (one site for each frame) and then the frame dials in and downloads the photos, delivering them directly to the grandparents' living room or wherever they put the frame (not necessarily just the den, where the computer is).
*The frame does have to be plugged into a phone line to download the photos each night, but it still works if the phone line is disconnected, it just won't go get new photos. My mom doesn't have a phone line in the living room but wanted to display the frame at a party they recently had. So she unplugged it from the phone line, and it just kept displaying the photos that it had downloaded the night before. It only needs to be plugged into the phone line to download new photos, and that can be as often/seldom as the user wants. (This may seem obvious but it certainly hadn't occurred to my tech-challenged mother. She thought it wouldn't work at all unless it was plugged into the phone line.)
I know that some of the negative reviews refer to shipping issues and Ceiva customer service. Well, anyone who waits until mid-December to buy electronics for Christmas should know better. I did actually have to call customer service when setting up our second frame (the first frame we got took all of 5 minutes to set up from the time we opened the box to the time we were looking at photos.) With the second frame, the website was not accepting the serial number when setting up the account. I called customer service, and within a couple minutes a very helpful man was able to fix something on their end and I was able to retry the registration successfully with him still on the line.
The only reason I can't give the frame 5 stars is because I don't love the idea of having to pay a monthly (or annual) fee for the storage/download. It does seem kind of silly when you can store photos at Shutterfly, Snapfish, etc. for free. But then again, those sites don't offer a product that automatically downloads the photos to a frame, so I pay the $99/year to Ceiva. I figure I probably spent at least that much each year, making prints and shipping them to the grandparents every time there was some photo-worthy event (since they would only check their email about once a year!)
Sounds great, but what they don't tell you is. . . .......2007-12-12
I purchased an 8 inch photo frame directly from Ceiva just last week. I bought this product because it is advertised as the one, no hassle, no real tech knowledge required product out there that will allow the computer-less to enjoy digital photos taken by others. Like so many others, this was going to be a Christmas gift for my mom, who is a senior, with a new grandchild that she doesn't get to see all that often.
First of all, I opened the box, turned on my Ceiva and immediately spotted a dead pixel right in the center of the screen. Despite this, I continued with the setup, just to see if I could actually get the thing to work through my regular phone line, just like my mom would do on Christmas morning. I got the account all setup on-line and uploaded some photos. However, despite many attempts I was unsuccessful at getting my frame to download the photos I'd uploaded. So,I called customer service who told me that since I have unlimited long-distance, my phone lines are probably digital, so the internal modem won't work. Well, guess what; my mom also has unlimited long distance. So, I'm sending this lemon back for a refund.
I really don't get it. I spent extra time on the phone with a Ceiva sales agent, asking exactly these types of questions. I wanted to be triple sure that this thing would work as advertised and that my mom would have no problems getting the photos I was sending her. Needless to say, the sales guy didn't bother to mention the minor detail that if my mom, like millions of other Americans, had an unlimited long-distance carrier that it simply wouldn't work. I think it is extremely dishonest of Ceiva to market their product to as they do without bothering to inform customers to check in advance to make sure their phone lines are compatible.
In short, Ceiva is a bust. Not only did they send me a broken item, but their service is not as advertised. Frankly, a company like this deserves to go out of business in my opinion.
Does not work with Qwest phone lines???.......2007-11-19
I thought as a public service I should mention something I found very shocking about the new Ceiva frames: They will not work with regular telephone service from the biggest telephone provider in Colorado and Utah and some other western states (i.e., Qwest, which they say is digital now). This is not just true for fancy service which also provide DSL, etc, but in fact for any service. I contacted Ceiva about this again just to make sure I understood them correctly the first time, and they confirmed it, and also that there is no planned resolution, and that the options are 1) returning the units for refund, or 2) also purchasing the broadband/wireless adapters and getting it to work with the new owners broadband. Unfortunately, one of the reasons we purchased Ceivas (instead of other internet-only frames that don't require a service contract) is that grandparents do not always have reliable broadband, or like fiddling with it when it fails, so the phone interface was really nice to have.
We have been satisfied long-time users of 3 of the Ceiva 2's and service (which seem to still work on Qwest, by the way), and wanted to change out the old frames for something brighter, so we are pretty disappointed.
I asked Ceiva why they even ship frames to Colorado/Utah, because they still work sometimes, as some people do not have Qwest.
Is it a problem in other states? I do not know. Caveat Emptor.
Don't Count on Perpetual Ceiva Service.......2007-11-02
This review is not about the product. We have two first generation Ceiva frames that still work. The technical model of managing pictures in a frame at a location that has power and telephone but no Internet connection is unique and works well.
This review is about Ceiva, the company.
We purchased these frames as charter subscribers from Ceiva when they were a fledgling company. As a promotion, we paid 3 times the annual rate for lifetime subscriptions. This was a good deal for us and good word of mouth advertising for Ceiva. The promotion was only offered for a few months, limiting Ceiva's financial liability.
In the intervening years, Ceiva posted a policy on their site defining "lifetime" as the life of the device or seven years. This limitation was not disclosed in the original offer and the only email I have received from them has been monthly newsletters: a marketing brochure.
When I noticed our lifetime subscriptions soon expire, I contacted their customer support. After working my way up to the manager of customer service, he denied my request to honor the original deal. He did offer me a discount on buying new, current product. In other words, he tried to turn a significant customer service incident into a sales opportunity.
The product provides a unique solution but considering the subscription cost, it is very expensive. Since it would have cost Ceiva so little to honor the few lifetime subscribers they have, I can only infer that their business model is not working and they are desperate for new revenue. Since the product relies on the services Ceiva provides later, my recommendation is to steer away from this company.
Instead, buy another product; spend a dollar a month and mail grandma an SD card. She can learn to change it.
