Absolutely Horrible Motherboard.......2007-10-24
This was the most frustrating motherboard I have ever worked with since the ASUS A7V333 model (are you familiar with that abomination?). Like many ASUS motherboards, this motherboard is also plagued with multiple issues. I spent 40 hours working on this motherboard to get it into a semi-useable state. (I'm presently waiting for a Return Authorization number from the vendor, but I'm still not going to give up.)
I contacted ABit Technical Support multiple times, still waiting for a response for over a month now. From what I hear from multiple sources online, ABIT Technical Support/Customer Assistance is extremely unsupportive and lack even basic customer service skills so I really have no confidence in ABIT at all.
Let's get started:
1. Do a Google image search (top down view) for the "ABIT IN9 32X" - I want to show you one of this MoBo's major selling points. See the nice copper heatsinks and tubing? High quality, keeps the chipsets running cool.. but wait a minute, the upper-most PCIE 1x port is directly in line with the heatsink! You might as well scrap that PCI-E 1x port, you can't use it.
2. This motherboard was definately not designed for current generation video cards. The PCI/e ports are not spaced far enough apart. Once you install a 8800 series graphics card, it completely covers up the 2 x PCI-Express ports below it.
3. The motherboard also forces you to install your primary graphics card into the uppermost PCIe port. This leaves the PCIe 1x ports completely unavailable for use. Installing 2 x 8800 GTX SLI graphics cards covers up _all_ ports except for a single PCI slot!
4. Chances are that you will be using a high end CPU for this motherboard, and if so, a large cooling fan. However, the power connector and fan power plugs are far too close to the CPU. There is virtually no space to plug in the fan/power after the CPU/fan is installed. (You will need to remove the motherboard, and attach all cabling first before mounting in your case.)
5. Similar issue with SATA and IDE ports, they are side-mounted and virtually impossible to connect once the MoBo is firmly attached to your case. Everything needs to be connected before you install the MoBo in your case.
6. OOB the mobo comes with an old BIOS that is not compatible with Core 2 Processors. It was a nightmare trying to upgrade the BIOS.
7. Make sure your fan has a 4-Pin adapter. My Zalman 9700 was a 3-pin, and the MoBo automatically shuts down if it can't detect the fan speed. I had to plugin an extra (old) CPU Fan just to turn on the PC and upgrade the BIOS. Then I disabled fan detection in the BIOS to get the MoBo operational.
8. Motherboard has major issues with 4GB RAM or higher. Only use 2GB until you upgrade the BIOS and tweak the configuration settings.
9. According to online forums, this MoBo is plagued with issues - CMOS Battery is dying on most boards, DOA systems, constantly freezes, etc.
10. Manual has very limited information, there's no troubleshooting advice - only the obvious, "Check your Cables", "RMA if it's not working." There was no info in the manual for any of the LED error messages I was receiving.
If you're going to get a motherboard for a Core 2 Processor, I would recommend the EVGA equivalent. The EVGA motherboard also comes with a lifetime warranty. (That's unheard of for motherboards!)
