Terrific Monitor.......2007-12-07
I purchased this LG to replace a Dell 20" widescreen monitor. Setup & installation was a snap, although I found the defaul monitor settings to be set, by default, to "torch" mode. After installing the Forte Manager software from the enclosed, CD, adjustment of monitor settings was a snap.
Impressive 2ms response time on this puppy! Base swivels the entire monitor & stand and it's not height-adjustable, but that's OK in my case.
The dell had four USB ports built-in. That's the only feature I'm missing with the LG.
Highly recommended!
Exceptional 22" LCD.......2007-11-01
I bought this exact model locally after much research in forums and recommendations by other gamers and LCD affectionados. I chose this model over the Samsung 226BW to avoid the panel lotto and because it's really the same LCD as the aforementioned Samsung hardware wise (save the exterior shell) except if you get this one you don't have to worry about the panel lotto (A B C Samsung variations) and it has an all-one-color panel instead of the more modern looking Samsung silver with black (personally I like the plain jet gloss black frame anyway). The one caveat hardware wise with the LG is the firmware it may come with. Anything after 1.4 is good. Mine had 1.8 and had been mentioned as having ghosting but there were many more people with the BF model of this LCD that didn't have ghosting with 1.8FW than did have ghosting so I took the chance, and waddya know ... I have no discernible ghosting. Most all of the new models of the L226WTQ-BF are shipping with firmware 1.8
Out-Of-Box
-------------------
-------------------
Upon setup out-of box the LCD is very attractive, and plain looking, yet very luxurious at the same time in a simplistic sort of way. Some times a minimalist look is very cool and it certainly goes well with my Black Ttake Tsunami case and black speakers. It has a nice swivel base. I have the LCD on a bi-level desk so having it rock back and forth from typing is a non-issue and it's at perfect eye level for me. It will tilt back a bit (but do it carefully) and it has a very nice swivel base. The LG also a very nice "V" shaped blue LED'ed power button that isn't obtrusive at all when using the monitor and goes amber when the PC is shut down (or in power saving mode). It has a 3 year warranty not too bad by that time I may have another LCD anyway and it was pure glory coming from a 19" Aperture Grill Sony (but it was very good for it's day may it rest in peace now). This LG LCD definitely felt like quality right out of the box.
Usability
------------------
------------------
First be sure you load the proper drivers for your OS for the LG L226BTQ-BF so you can use proper monitor INF files instead of plug and play. By default the display is set up @ 6500k colors and grays and greens, and whites are not very good but I could tell all it needed was some minor tweaking. One of my gamer buds with the same LCD emailed LG and LG recommended that he not even use the Forte Manager just use OSD (on screen display/controls on the LCD itself) and some slight tweaks with the video card driver software (ATI or nVIDIA) will do exactly the same. I read Lakefronts OSD setup and it was pretty good, but I accomplished the same exact thing but had better whites and better grays-blues by using 8500k instead of his 7300k (2 notches above default 6500k in the OSD/Color section and that way I didn't even have to touch R G B factory settings (50-50-50)
*One note -- this LCD has the F-Engine (Flatron engine) that will switch contrast on the fly (dynamic contrast) if you're using Movie or Text mode. I use the "normal" mode to avoid the dymamic contrast changing most of the time, and since I use normal mode most of the time I made most of my changes from there. The color presets I'm going to give you were after a full day of trying the Forte Manager (I uninstalled it) and 5 different preset configurations from various forums including Lakefronts settings (his were good but not quite there for me anyway). In the end I recommend not even using the Forte Manager and just use the OSD and video cards own 2D-3D IQ settings
My L226WTQ-BF Color setup
-------------------------
-------------------------
1. Press the "source button" and select "normal mode.
2. Press "menu" button Keep brightness @ 100 and set contrast @ 88, and leave gamma @ 0.
3. Now tab down to the "RGB" section and move the RGB slider two notches to 8500k (you can't see it display 8500k but it's on notch below 9300k). Now you'll notice that whites, blues, and greys are MUCH better. Red, Blue, Green all stay @ 50%.
4. Next tab down to Horizontal and Vertical.Make that 55 and 65 and keep sharpness @ 5 respectively (I found this filled in any slight trim gap on my LCD.
Extra Tweaking-Video card with drivers
---------------
---------------
I happen to have a 8800GTX which is an nVIDIA video card so I'll give you my control panel/ settings (not sure about ATI but you can probably mess with it and get the same after some time tweaking. For nVIDIA cards you go to the nVIDIA control panel - then in the left view pane select "Adjust Desktop Color Settings". My settings are as follows;
**Brightness=50%
**Digital Vibrance=15% (this is an NVIDIA feature and some may not like this but I think it's great-depending on your own IQ tastes it brightens things up without the oversatutarion of gama)
**Contrast=50%
**Image Sharpening=38%
**Gamma=9%
Now go to the "Adjust Video Color Settings" in the video and TV section and my setting there are;
Brightness=50%
Contrast=50%
Saturation=58% ___ and put a checkmark in "apply to all video settings"
After that you should be good to go! and I HIGHLY recommend this LCD, even over the Samsung 226BW equivalent to avoid the panel lottery.
Great Monitor!.......2007-10-22
I replaced a similar Gateway 22" monitor with this one. I'm very pleased with this monitor. Starting with the 'ghosting' problem I've seen a few people report on in forums, the only time I've seen this was when the computer was booting up just before the desktop comes on-screen. Otherwise I haven't seen it on the desktop. The monitor was very simple to set up and unlike the Gateway, Windows VISTA correctly identified the monitor type (VISTA would only identify the Gateway as a 'generic monitor'). The 'features' sticker on the monitor was lightly sticky and attached to the frame, not the glass so there was no problem with residue as another reviewer reported. Once I briefly scanned the user's manual (only supplied on the disk or as a download from LG) the monitor was easy to adjust but actually the factory settings give a pretty good presentation. Monitor settings can also be adjusted using the Forte Manager software supplied by LG on the included (Note: You can also download a later version from LG's website). Color is beautiful and fonts are very clear. I purchased this monitor locally for $329.00 but I wanted to write a review here as I often use Amazon comments when making a decision. This is my first LG product and I'm very pleased with it and would recommend the LG monitor.
lakefront.......2007-08-17
This is a good monitor. But the default factory setting by LG is quite unacceptable (as of 2007). Just like a reviewer elsewhere mentioned, the default settings turn light gray objects into light green. If your unit also looks greenish, try the following setting (I hope LG can reset their default settings to these values too):
1. All the buttons mentioned here are counted from the left side of the monitor.
o Press the 2nd key to enter the menu.
o Use the 3rd/4th buttons to traverse up and down the menu.
o Press the 5th button to select/enter an item in the menu.
o Use 3rd(-)/4th(+) buttons to decrease/increase the value of an item.
2. Set brightness 93%, contrast 87%, preset 7300, Gamma -50.
3. Set red 32, green 30, blue 29.
4. Right click on a empty spot on screen -> Property -> Setting -> 1680x1050
5. Right click on a empty spot on screen -> Property -> Setting -> Advanced -> DPI ->
163% (so that the letters are bigger. The computer will restart here.)
Bear in mind that the LG monitor you get could be slightly different.
Beautiful design, great value.......2007-08-14
I've used this monitor for a day now, and still can't take my eyes off it every time I step into the room. The striking black and white glossy bezel gives this a distinctively different feel from the drab matt black pastic that surrounds most other lcds.
Apart from that, the color reproduction from our photos was amazing at the default settings, the high contrast, even if it is dynamic, reproduces details that are invisible on my glossy dell laptop display.
The video performance varied depending on the type of video I was watching. Windows media player with Nvidia PureVideo running on my Vista laptop seemed to produce the best results. Divx clips were more problematic, probably due to some quirk in the dynamic contrast (DFC) feature which does poorly with the codec.
I tested it with a Macbook running OSX as well, and video playback in itunes was flawless.
Since I mounted the screen on a separate lcd arm, the instability of the stand was not obvious to me.
The only issue I have with the panel thus far is the placement of the control buttons on the bottom of the bezel. The symbols on the bezel are indecipherable because of the gloss, and I find myself clicking on the wrong button too frequently.
